This workshop will be led by Philip—a performer in Cirque du Soleil and many other shows, as well as an instructor, featuring Saint-Saëns’ The Carnival of the Animals (Le carnaval des animaux)—a piece seemingly straight out of an encyclopedia of animals. Listening to this, you’ll find your body moving on its own volition, transforming everyone into wild beasts!

VOCES8 is an a cappella group hailing from the United Kingdom that sings classic and traditional pieces as well as pop, jazz, and a variety of other genres. Listen closely to see what things from the world of nature you can hear. There will even be an ensemble corner where attendees can sing together with VOCES8!

Eitetsu Hayashi, one of Japan’s foremost Taiko performers, and his internationally active unit, the Eitetsu Fuun-no-Kai, will be putting on a workshop! Learn how to read kuchi shoga—the musical notation used for Taiko pieces—and get a taste of what it feels like to play the traditional Japanese drums as you perform the piece, Sen-no-Kaikyo, which they have taught to children all over the world, and was composed to celebrate the recovery of Kobe after the city was devastated by a major earthquake.
*Participants will use two empty plastic bottles (350 – 500ml) as instruments. If possible, please bring a pair of plastic bottles with you.
