Learn the English required in art settings in just seven months

TERA English is a 15-lesson series in which artists, gallery personnel and other people interested in art can learn essential English for art settings such as exhibitions and art projects. TERA English started in 2014, and this third year of the program will include basic, intermediate and advanced classes. People who need to communicate in English in art settings, those who hope to take part in an overseas residence program or wish they had opportunities to use English…even English conversation beginners will find the lessons accessible and useful. If you want to talk about art in English, this program is for you.

Basic class: for beginners who want to review English grammar from scratch
This grammar training class focuses on learning grammar and then applying it to output such as writing and speaking. Classroom learning makes up the first half of each two-hour class, and practical application the second half. With this structure, participants learn English grammar through example sentences incorporating useful expressions for art settings, and make effective use of what they’ve learned. To those who think “I’ve never been good at English!” or “I feel like grammar is my weak point” or “For now I want to be able to communicate at the most basic level,” this class is recommended. (Classes are conducted in Japanese.)

Intermediate class: for intermediate learners interested in English conversation for artist in residence programs, and in conversing about famous artists
Participants practice explaining and expressing their thoughts and feelings about art works, while learning expressions useful in communicating with artists and personnel from overseas. In the first half of the class they study conversational expressions essential for overseas residence programs, and in the second half they speak about well known artists from inside and outside Japan. At the end of the course, they give a presentation. This class is recommended for people who have basic knowledge of English but have not used it recently and want to refresh their memory, those with a desire to talk about art in English, and those who would like to improve their listening and speaking skills. (Classes are conducted in Japanese and English.)

Advanced class: focusing on student presentations, for those with advanced English skills
With student presentations as its core element, this class provides an opportunity to take part in discussions while acquiring knowledge about concepts and artists essential in speaking about contemporary art. Through the small group seminar structure, importance is given to time spent in asking questions and exchanging opinions. Each participant will give at least three presentations during the course. Native English speaking instructors and feedback from classmates will enable them to steadily improve their presentation skills. This class is recommended for those who have English speaking and listening skills but wish to learn art-related English, and those who would like to speak in depth about art in English. (Classes are conducted in English.)
