Immigration Museum Tokyo: Sento elegy, sentimental yatai: the fading face of Showa — Kent Dahl's Senju

Genre:
  • Visual Art / Media Art ,
  • Exhibition / Screening

Danish-born journalist and Senju resident Kent Dahl is exhibiting a vast amount of photographs he took during the 1990s to 2000s featuring the sento public baths, chimneys, corner shops and bustling bars of Senju. Senju is a town between times: in Dahl’s words, a place with “one foot in the past and one turned to the future”. This nine-day event will function as a journey through the time and space of the past, present and future, as visitors compare the scenes of times past as glimpsed through the viewfinder with today’s gradually-changing landscape. Organizers have taken a variety of approaches to exhibiting the photographs during the event. As well as an exhibition in an old Japanese house, there will be a mobile photography exhibition in yatai street stall form, for example.
