Express art projects in words

This course cultivates a capacity for communicating art projects to others.
To put an art project into words, people need to be able to navigate the relevant contexts, understand the processes, and absorb information on the people and communities at the heart of the effort. This program introduces different narrative styles and expressions, giving participants a valuable opportunity for developing the ability to verbalize art projects and find a richer personal voice. With professional writers on board to offer technical advice, participants learn how to be better writers and presenters.

*This program will be conducted in Japanese.

Program

1. Understanding art projects
In this portion of the program, participants gain insight into art projects from different angles and explore different contexts and expressions that help create connections with society.
Example topics: What is an art project? / How do you “socialize” art projects? / What is the history of art projects? / How do you communicate art projects effectively?

2. Developing word-weaving input
By studying case studies of art projects, heading into the field, and hearing how artists and organizers put their ideas into words, participants broaden their verbal palettes for discussing art projects.

3. Word-weaving in action
Participants work on weaving words out of projects by learning from guest lecturers with backgrounds in guiding tours and planning hands-on experiences, writing reports on field visits, and presenting about their findings.
For their final projects, participants weave art projects together in their own words to create print, web, or other media-based content. The scope of the content can go beyond the written word—from oral expression to renderings that include elements like photography and graphic design, participants are free to explore a variety of formats.

Features

  • To explore the connections among the background of a given art project, the themes involved, and the character and history of the local setting, participants practice gathering information and doing research.
  • A key goal of the program is to help participants perceive and discuss artists and artistic expression as a whole—not just art projects.
