A new session of the “Street Artist Academy” is set to begin, focusing on street performers as one segment in the deepening of human resources in the performing arts. In the 12 years since the Tokyo Metropolitan Government instituted its “Heaven Artist” system of licensing there has been vast growth in the activities of street performers, and there is now a need to raise the quality of these as performing arts that can take their place on the world stage.
Talented street performers create an artistic environment, and change the atmosphere of an urban area. The Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre has made efforts to improve the level of these performances using such spaces as its Theatre-front Plaza and Ikebukuro Nishiguchi Park.
The Street Artist Academy exists to encourage the collaborative creation of truly interesting and entertaining performances. Those who wish to polish not only their skills but their artistic sense in street performance as well are welcome to take part.
