Join us as we make our own Barong, a sacred mythological beast in Indonesia, and create gamelan instruments for a parade through local streets!

Based in and around Sumida-ku, Hokusai Sound Expo is a program that gives children the chance to encounter some of the world’s most beautiful-sounding instruments, taking part in rehearsals that culminate in a performance.

Indonesia’s gamelan music has been passed down the ages since ancient times. At Bali’s festivals, this music provides the backdrop for the battle between the sacred beast Barong and the demon queen Rangda. Based on a real Barong mask, participants will help to make its body and create their own gamelan instruments before parading through local streets with them.
