Hama-rikyu Gardens

Tokyo Grand Tea Ceremony 2018 will be held to encourage visitors to experience and become more familiar with Japanese traditional culture and performing arts.
An “Indoor tea ceremony” will be held for authentic tea ceremony (prior application is necessary), as well as an “Outdoor tea ceremony” to casually enjoy the fun of tea ceremony outdoors in greenery, and a “Tea ceremony for beginners”, designed for beginners and foreigners are able to learn the basics of tea ceremony while making tea with two pairs.
Programs provided in Hama-rikyu Gardens will include “Outdoor tea ceremony in English,” where manners of ceremony will be explained in English, and with the cooperation of the Tokyo Metropolitan High School Cultural Federation; Tea Ceremony Department, “Outdoor tea ceremony by high school students,” where high school students will serve tea. On the special stage, enjoy “Kabuki performance”, “calligraphy performance” and music performances of “Koto“and ”Kouta”. In the garden, join Kabuki make-up workshop and Calligraphy workshop, and may enjoy shopping Japanese sweets and green tea, which are served at the ceremonies.

Indoor Tea Ceremony

■Venue
(1)Nakajima-no-ochaya (Capacity of 35 persons per ceremony)
(2)Hobai-tei (Capacity of 25 persons per ceremony)
■Fee: 700 yen
*Prior application is required. (Application period: August 1 to 31)
*Participation fee to be paid on that day.
*Bring the result e-mail or the reply postcard to receive a ticket at the ticket counter on that day.
*In case of oversubscription, a drawing will be held.
*If the number of applicants falls under the capacity or if cancellations occur on that day, tickets will be sold at the venues on the day.
*During the Tokyo Grand Tea Ceremony 2018, normal tea service will not be available at Nakajima-no-ochaya.

Outdoor Tea Ceremony in English

■Venue: Fujimi Yama area (Capacity of 32 persons per ceremony)
■Fee: 300 yen
*With an English Guide

Outdoor Tea Ceremony

■Venue: Fujimi Yama area (3 locations, capacity of 32 persons per ceremony)
■Fee: 300 yen
*There are three locations. One is for Sencha, green tea.

Tea Ceremony Workshop for Beginners

■Venue: Kaboku-en (Capacity of 40 persons in 20 pairs per ceremony)
■Fee: 300 yen/person 
*Participation by individuals is allowed.  
*With an English Guide

 Outdoor Tea Ceremony by high school students

■Venue: Fujimi Yama area (Capacity of 20 persons per ceremony)
■Fee: 300 yen

Performances / Stalls

■Koto, Kouta music, Kabuki performance, calligraphy performance
■Kabuki make-up workshop, calligraphy worlshop
■Providing photo spots
■Stalls for small Japanese goods, Japanese sweets, green tea, etc.
*The event will be cancelled in the case of bad weather(except for light rain).

【Results of drawing】

The result of the drawing will be sent to the applicants around Monday, September 10 by the e-mail or the reply postcard.


*The application is limited to one per applicant for each venue. In case of the application reaching the fixed number, we will hold a drawing.
*In case when the application is below capacity, or there is cancellation on the day of the event, we will sell tea ceremony tickets at the venue.
*Personal information obtained via the application process will be used only for the purposes of contacting event operations.
