Puppets get bigger! Then smaller!
How about playing together in the wonder-filled world of shadow puppetry?
This year, instead of participants getting together we offer a performance with shadow puppets made by participants!
Last year, children making up the Yatokko domei (children involved with the YATO project) gathered at Komorebi-do, Ryoudenji Temple for a 5-session workshop in which they made shadow puppets and practiced performing with them, going on to present a shadow play at September’s YATO Summer Fair.
This year, Coronavirus (COVID-19) means caution is still necessary regarding gatherings, so instead of bringing participants together, we are attempting to hold workshops by means of video lectures and postal correspondence.
While hoping that everyone can get together again another time to perform shadow puppetry, this year the puppets made by participants will be brought together for the staging of the legend“YATO no Ryuo” (“Dragon King of YATO”).
Scenes of last year’s shadow puppetry workshop can be seen here.
Participants will make shadow puppets on the theme of the traditional legend of Ryuogaike from Ryoudenji Temple in the Tadao district of Machida City where YATO is based. Workshop instructor/shadow play artist Koheisai Kawamura will then perform an audience-less shadow play using the puppets made by participants.
What participants will make:1st session/Dragon puppets, 2nd session/their own puppets
Main tasks: Drawing a puppet picture on cardboard, cutting it out with box cutters and scissors.
*Lectures videos can be seen via restricted YouTube access. There is no designated time or date for viewing.
*Participants will not appear in person in the shadow play as they did the previous year.
