Shizumu Oto: Calming sounds (Let’s play earthenware instruments): Seeking participants

Genre:
  • Kids / Youth ,
  • Art Project ,
  • Workshop

Join musicians for a musical performance with earthenware instruments you have made.

It is said that a long, long time ago, a dragon lived in “Ryuogaike,” behind Ryoudenji Temple. Workshop participants will be playing music to calm the dragon. After the performance, the instruments will be returned to the earth.
“Shizumu Oto” is a workshop for experiencing the roots of music.

Outline

This is a workshop to experience with children how prayerful things disappear, like the origin of music itself.
Musicians will join participants in a performance using earthenware instruments made by the children. At the end, the instruments will be returned to the earth. This is an act of giving back something intangible to Mother Earth, like a gift.
With thoughts of the legend passed down in Tadao, we would like to offer up the sounds we make now, and encourage participants to feel that each of us today plays a part within the wider flow of time that will carry on for the next 500 years.

Implementation process

  1. We ask participants to pick up materials (terracotta) from the headquarters of Toukoukai (social welfare corporation). We will be handing over the materials on weekdays between Monday, July 27 and Friday, August 7, 9:00 – 17:00.
  2. Each participant will make a earthenware item by watching the instructor’s lecture videos. (URL details for lecture videos will be sent out from Saturday, August 1 to the e-mail address supplied with your application. We recommend participants mold their items by Sunday, August 23, due to the drying time needed).
  3. Please inform us by e-mail of the date and time you are bringing your earthenware items in, and bring the finished items to Ryoudenji Temple.
Item receival dates: Sunday, August 30, Monday August 31 10:00 – 16:00 (both dates)
Place: 2-5-33 Tadao, Machida City, Tokyo
    Contact e-mail address: info@yato500.net
  4. Participants will give a performance together with musicians, using earthenware instruments they have made, after which the instruments will be returned to the earth.
