Puppets get bigger! Then smaller!
How about playing together in the wonder-filled world of shadow puppetry?

For this year’s workshop, we’ll use the plants and flowers of the hills around Ryoudenji Temple as inspiration for our puppet character designs. The shadow puppets you make will feature in a shadow play at the YATO Summer Fair fall festival!

We are holding a shadow puppetry workshop in preparation for the YATO Summer Fair 2021.This year, we’ll be doing fieldwork in the countryside around Ryoudenji Temple in order to learn about mountain plants and the local landscape, and then we’ll make shadow puppets using our imagination, and based on what we learn. We’ll go on to present a shadow play together at the YATO Summer Fair 2021.Children who participate in the workshops become Yatokko domei members!

Scenes of the 2019 shadow puppetry workshop can be seen here.

The performance

A shadow play will be performed at the YATO Summer Fair 2021 scheduled to be held on Thursday, September 23 (public holiday), using shadow puppets made by children during the workshops.
We will keep an eye on the situation regarding coronavirus in order to consider whether to implement the performance online or hold it with an actual audience. If the children are able to get together and carry out the performance on-site, the anticipation is that children will take part in the shadow play performance as puppeteers.
