Hama-rikyu Gardens

In Japan, there is a traditional tea ceremony called “Sado”. In sado, the master of the ceremony invites guests and serves Japanese traditional tea. The Tokyo Grand Tea Ceremony 2015 is held for foreigners and beginners to introduce and enjoy “Sado”. There are tea ceremony for beginners how to make and enjoy tea with an English interpreter in both venues. In Hama-rikyu Gardens, you can enjoy Nodate, outdoor tea ceremony with an English interpreter. We offer programs for foreign visitors to experience Kado (flower arrangement) and Kiyari (traditional songs of workers).

If the weather is bad on the day of the event, an announcement of whether or not the event will be held will be posted to the official website.

Programs

Cha-seki;Indoor Tea Ceremony

■Venues: Hobai-tei and Nakajima-no-ochaya.
■Capacity: 25 or 35 people per ceremony
■Fee: 700 yen

Nodate;Outdoor Tea Ceremony

■Venue: Nakano-hashi area
■Capacity: 30 people per ceremony
■Fee: 300 yen
*Tickets are available at the venue on the day of the event.
*One of three ceremonies will have “sencha” green tea.

Tea Ceremony for Beginners

■Venue: Kaboku-en
■Capacity: 20 pairs of 40 people per ceremony
■Fee: 300 yen
*Tickets are available at the venue on the day of the event.
*The tea ceremony with an explanation in English.

Nodate ,Outdoor Tea Ceremony in English

■Venue: Nakano-hashi area
■Capacity: 30 people per ceremony
■Fee: 300 yen
*Tickets are available at the venue on the day of the event.
*The tea ceremony with an explanation in English.

Nodate ,Outdoor Tea Ceremony by high school students

■Venue: Nakano-hashi area
■Capacity: 30 people per ceremony
■Fee: 300 yen
*Tickets are available at the venue on the day of the event.

*There are some traditional performing arts events.
*The event will be changed or canceled in the case of bad weather (except for light rain).

How to apply for Indoor Tea Ceremony

Please apply from the official website.
*Result of the drawing will be emailed to the submitted address of the applicants around September 10 (Thu).

【By reply-paid postcard】
On a reply-paid postcard, write your preferred venue ((1) Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum or (2)Hama-rikyu Gardens), date, time (AM or PM), the total number of people (up to 2), and the representative’ s name, address and telephone number, and mail the postcard to the Tokyo Grand Tea Ceremony Office.
*Please write the name and address of the person representing your party on the reply-postcard as well.
*Result of the drawing will be sent to the applicants around September 10 (Thu) by the reply-postcard.

【Notes】
*The application is limited to one per applicant for each venue. In case of the application reaching the fixed number, we will hold a drawing.
*In case when the application is below capacity, or there is cancellation on the day of the event, we will sell indoor tea ceremony tickets at the venue.
*Personal information obtained via the application process will be used only for the purposes of contacting applicants and conducting event operations.

【Application deadline】
Deadline is August 31.
*Applications must be postmarked by the deadline date. Online application will close at 23:59 on August 31.

Admission to Hama-rikyu Gardens

300 yen (General), 150 yen (Seniors: 65 & over), Free for children up to elementary school students and for junior high school students residing in or attending schools in Tokyo.
