Performance Project "The World"

  • Organization : Kakuya Ohashi and Dancers
  • Section : In Tokyo
  • Type of Grant Program : Single
  • Art Forms : Dance

Outline

This is Kakuya Ohashi and Dancers’ first research-based project, with Kaku Nagashima functioning as dramaturge. Set in Koto Ward, Tokyo, the dance weaves a story about a vampire that sucks up memories lingering in places it scouts out places to inhabit.

In 2014, Season 1 performances were presented. One was a dance performance “The World (A),” and the other was an installation and dialog “The World (B).” This project for Season 2 offers making-the-rounds-type performances during which the audience moves around for a hands-on experience, and performances at the theater.

Profile

Kakuya Ohashi and Dancers is a dance company that champions hard-core dance, and pursues expressions of the human body in modern society along with the methodology of Ankoku Butoh (Japanese post-modern dance founded by Tatsumi Hijikata).

The company also engages in activities that extend beyond dance, producing and distributing a free newspaper related to Empire, Aerial, a work it performed in 2008. In February 2013, it published Books, Phantoms, the company’s first collection of photos taken by photographer GO.

On January 28, 2013, Kakuya Ohashi and Dancers became a general incorporated association.
