Outline

This is a memorial concert for Mr. Akira Miyoshi who died in October, 2013. Mr. Miyoshi and the Tokyo Philharmonic Chorus have made contributions to the development of choral music. Since the choir’s founding in 1956, Mr. Miyoshi composed and directed many of the choral compositions. A large number of his works form the repertoire in the choral world and have been performed frequently.
In this concert, focus is on Miyoshi’s compositions. The choir will perform four songs from his masterpieces with lyrics for each song written by famous poets of the 20th Century and today such as Toshiko Takada, Chuya Nakahara, Shuntaro Tanikawa, and So Sakon. Mr. Kenji Otani, known for his style and work for conducting a wide range of choral compositions — from the Middle Ages to modern — will conduct. We delight in bringing the essence of Mr. Miyoshi to a wider audience.

Profile

The Tokyo Philharmonic Chorus, founded in 1956, is Japan’s foremost independent professional choir. The choir performs a wide range of works from a wide range of periods and genres, but the core of its work is with Japanese composers and premiering new compositions. Currently the number of compositions commissioned and premiered by the Tokyo Philharmonic Chorus is over 203. By performing these compositions the choir has taken on an important role in building a fundamental repertoire of contemporary choral music in Japan.
