LAUNDRY OF THE SENSES IN GINZA

  • Organization : P3 art and environment
  • Section : None
  • Type of Grant Program : Single

Outline

Artist Yoshinari Nishio was invited to conduct his art project “Laundry of the Senses in Ginza.”
Under the theme of Ginza’s fashion and alleyways, participants performed the daily actions of washing and hanging laundry in parks and public spaces, changing the landscape of Ginza.
By creating a participatory platform for its approach to the enduring fashion culture of Ginza from the unique perspective of the artist, Nishio’s project reconsidered “dress” as culture as well as the utilization of public spaces like alleyways and parks, aiming to endow Ginza with new communicative capacities.
The day of the event featured a performance for which Yoshinari had previously asked people living and working in Ginza to supply clothing that was then washed and hung up to dry by participants as they moved through Ginza’s many tiny alleyways. The event also featured an installation display and workshop in Sukiyabashi Park, and a talk by the artist.
Visitors were encouraged to take a map around the streets of Ginza to enjoy not only the display in Sukiyabashi Park but also the installation created by the performance of laundry being hung in the alleyways.
