Outline

Works by Sanyuutei Encho, a rakugo performer who created numerous masterpieces, are lengthy; and because performances are currently subject to waiting time or limited running time, the works of his that are currently performed are excerpts of complete works – in other words, there has been an unavoidable increase in performances that only feature part of an entire story. For this performance, Sanyuutei Yuba presented “Kaidan Botan Doro,” a Sanyuutei Encho work thought to be fairly familiar to most people. Making use of the solo performance format allowing him free use of the time, Sanyuutei Yuuba re-configurated and edited the total 22 stories of “Kaidan Botan Doro” into a six-story performance comprising three stories in the first half and three stories in the second half. This way he performed the entire work, including parts not normally performed, reviving the inherited art of rakugo as a continuous storytelling tradition, and offering the audience a new way to enjoy rakugo in the present day.
