Outline of the project

First year
Recreated dance piece “The Sick Dancer”
Date: February 9-11, 2018
Venue: BUoY Arts Center Tokyo (Kita Senju)
As part of DAN’s Butoh archive research, the group carried out an activity survey of 125 Butoh performers in Japan. A kick-off event “Kita Senju BAP Night” was held on February 10, 2018.

Second year
Recreated dance piece “Green Table 2017”
Date: September 5-6, 2018
Venue: Goethe-Institut Japan
As part of DAN’s Butoh research in Japan and overseas, the group carried out a survey of current working conditions for 405 Butoh dancers in Japan and abroad.
As part of DAN’s dance archive management, the group worked on system development for the construction of digital archiving.

Third year
Performance: “All About Zero”
Date: June 8, 2019
Venue: Theater X
In February 2020 DAN plans to hold a symposium based on previous surveys of Butoh performers. Its Butoh digital archive is scheduled to be available from October 2019.

Profile

NPO Dance Archive Network
With the general public in mind, DAN collects materials on contemporary Butoh activities and preserves them using digital technology. As well as making the material available to the general public through performances, exhibitions, publishing, Internet etc., the group’s activities support Butoh research and creation that makes use of the archival material available through these channels. Furthermore, through in-house development and practice the group is committed to the passing-down of global Butoh culture, with the aim of contributing to its further development and dissemination. In addition to the accumulation of archives, DAN also develops archiving methods that utilize cutting-edge technology, and conducts content planning and production with archive materials while at the same time constructing a dance archive network in Japan and overseas.
