DenchuLab.2021

  • Organization : Denchus
  • Section : None
  • Type of Grant Program : Single

Outline

As one of the projects underway to revive, through artistic activity, Denchu Hirakushi House and Atelier–the former home and studio of Denchu Hirakushi, a pioneer of modern Japanese sculpture–and cultivate it as a place for new forms of creation and exchange, DenchuLab is a program that supports artists’ creative work and exhibitions. In 2021, organizers invited aspiring artists working in a variety of fields and people connected with the Yanaka/Ueno-Sakuragi area as guests for a total of 3 conversational exchange sessions split into 3 parts. These sessions provided an opportunity for aspiring artists, local people, and visitors to share space and discuss the present and the future of art and the community as they sat around a low chabudai table together. On the strength of this initiative, the project went on to explore approaches to the arts and culture hubs that will be required going forward.

Profile

Denchus
“Denchus” was formed by Taito Cultural & Historical Society (an NPO which revives historical ways of life and culture), the general incorporated association YanakanoOkatte (which brings people together through art and cultural projects), and young artists, all based mainly in the Yanaka/Ueno-Sakuragi area, with the aim of making Denchu House and Atelier a place for new types of artistic creation. Denchus has revived the Taisho-era house/studio which is the former residence and workplace of Denchu Hirakushi, a pioneer of modern Japanese sculpture, and carries out programs which cultivate a nucleus for expression and exchange among artists and people from the local area and around the world.
