Profile

Issui Minegishi
Issui Minegishi is the 4th Head of the Seikyodo Ichigenkin Tradition. The Seikyodo follows the idea of Zen practice which removes all unnecessary vanities. She was trained by her great-grandmother, the 3rd Head, an officially designated Intangible Cultural Treasure of Japan. She succeeded to the title of 4th Head in 1988, and was honored as Graduate of NHK (Japanese National Broadcasting Company) training program for young performers of traditional Japanese instruments. She holds recitals and lecture concerts of both classical and new songs in Japan and abroad several times a year, and is also engaged in teaching. She is also exploring new ways to expand and incorporate arts other than music, such as dance and theater collaborations. She won the bronze prize in the division of “1-2 string musical instruments” at Delphic 2009 (The Art and Cultural Olympic Games) in Jeju, Korea. She has received two grants from the Asian Cultural Council; in 2010 to conduct research on contemporary music in New York for 6 months, and in 2013 to study the Chinese seven-stringed zither in Taiwan for 2 months. In 2017, she toured in the US with two shakuhachi performers, and conducted workshops and concerts at 13 locations.
