This exhibition aims to “present clothing from a time and world removed from the present in order to imagine the possibility of transformation, expansion, and renewal of the human body.” Loden presents accessories adapted to changing times and media in the leadup to the year 2121, in-person at the exhibition venue and online.
In this project, Loden attempts to map out the possibilities for our physical transformation by transcending the existential body and capturing the body through fashion based on digital media and the environment in which it is placed.
While the exhibition revolves around a brand buyers meeting (not a real-time meeting but one where you preview what will be sold within a fixed period of time in future and make a purchase there and then as you envisage the future), designing the exhibition space from a folk art perspective means the relationship between the works, their space, and the gallery visitor is constructed along a time axis.
Additionally, during the exhibition period 3D data downloads of accessories will be possible, and online tickets for archived content will be on sale at the venue only. Moreover, by intentionally not providing conventional fashion brand looks, the intention is to let the viewer decide how things should be worn, and to get the viewer to reconsider the relationship between the work and their own body through the item. In this way, designing 3D printed works without a gravity setting encourages visitors to conjure different ways of wearing items.
Christopher Loden
Exhibits works both in Tokyo and online.
Loden considers “fashion” outfitting and its impact on the body from the perspective of media related to the social framework itself, and the environment in which it is placed. Using various media/pedestals, he reassesses perceptions of the resulting physical/social body from a new perspective on the boundaries of those perceptions, and considers the possibilities for body transformation that open up as a result.
