Outline

This festival at Za Koenji theater in Koenji was designed to convey the appeal of documentaries beyond the boundaries of television and film to a wider audience. The festival was run by creators themselves: well-known cinemaphotographer Yutaka Yamazaki acted as program director and film director Atsushi Kasezawa served as chairman of the festival’s executive committee.
The festival featured three screening categories: a special screening category, a guest selector category, and a competition category. For this year’s special screening category, works were selected on the theme “about democracy.” The aim of festival organizers was to widely communicate the appeal of documentary film culture to a more general audience by inviting diverse guests to talk about the appeal of the documentary genre from their own unique perspectives. For example, the guest selector category featured films recommended by prominent figures such as film director Hirokazu Koreeda.
