Deaf filmmaker training course basic advanced

  • Organization : Japan deaf art association
  • Section : None
  • Type of Grant Program : Single

Outline

This deaf filmmaker training course (basic/advanced) was held during January-February 2024, representing a platform where deaf people
can experience direct learning of sign language – their language – and of film production from successful role models such as British director Louis Neethling and Mika Imai. The basic sessions provided the nuts and bolts of film production, scriptwriting, filming, etc.; and in the practical sessions, the eleven participants were split into two teams to create a short film of around ten minutes and give a screening of it.
The project was aimed at building a foundation for the development of a society in which deaf and hearing-impaired people are commonplace on film productions.

Profile

The predecessor of this organization was the private organization Tokyo Deaf Film Festival Executive Committee. Comprising mainly deaf performers, the association is aimed at invigorating deaf performing arts. As well as running Tokyo Deaf Film Festival, the association has held film production workshops for deaf students, amongst other projects. The association was incorporated last year, and serves as a point of contact for deaf and hearing people involved in arts-related work including film, stage, and art.
