With the aim of building new relationships centering around physical expression, Phyms has held “WEEKENDS,” a series of events comprising the following six programs based on the concept “dialog surrounding physical expression.”
1.A lecture by dance scholar Yuma Ochi tracing modern and contemporary dance history, with the auxiliary theme of democratization
2. A reading group looking at texts covering contemporary Butoh expression
3. A laboratory program in which multiple choreographers hold discussions under the topic “choreography”
4. A dance performance in which choreographers from the same generation interact and showcase their individual forms of expression
5. A screening of a video work by choreographer Yasuko Yokoshi on the subject of actionist Kubikukuri Takuzo
6. Roundtable meeting to discuss future forms of dance expression with guest Yuya Tsukahara (contact Gonzo)
All the programs provided opportunities for people from various generations with different methods of engaging with dance to cultivate new relationships by meeting and talking, as well as the chance to consider and practice contemporary dance from multiple angles in a multilayered way.
The project was planned and facilitated by Taku Yoshida and managed by Arihiro Yamada and Yasushi Kurotaki. All three are choreographers and dancers; and through this project they explored ways to connect dance and society through means other than the performance of works.
