Outline

The National Center of Neurology and Psychiatry is an historic hospital in Tokyo that has existed since shortly after WWII. The hospital’s much-loved old avenue of cherry trees was cut down, saddening patients and hospital staff. By carving Buddhas out of the felled cherry branches, and by extension carving out memories of the trees that were rooted in the land, Buddhist sculptor Nisi is not only preserving the history of the land for future generations, but he has also imbued the cherry trees with a new spirit, providing a source of emotional support to the hospital and the people around it today.
