Outline

KEIFUKAI’s “JYONOMAI SANBAN NOH” is a Noh performance series organized by the Noh and Kyogen Appreciation Club (headed by Kanze school Noh artist NAGAYAMA KEIZO) with financial support from Arts Council Tokyo. With NAGAYAMA taking the lead role for each performance, the program comprised three works: “Nonomiya” (the first performance, held in December 2023), “Yokihi” (the second performance, held in March 2024), and “Teika” (the third performance, held in June 2024). A preparatory lecture was also given prior to each performance and streamed online at a later date. By having the same Noh artist perform a jonomai, a Noh dance piece pivotal to each performance, the intention was to clarify the differences and similarities between each work. Moreover, given the organization’s belief in the importance of having everyone in the audience experience the skill and artistry of a leading Noh artist at close quarters, the main venue for the performances was a small theater called TESSENKAI NOHGAKU TRAINING CENTER in Tokyo’s Minamiaoyama district.

Profile

Noh and Kyogen Appreciation Club
Formed by Kanze school Noh artist NAGAYAMA KEIZO with the aim of improving his own art and popularizing Noh. The organization holds regular workshops at the Noh rehearsal studio Setagaya Nagayama Noh Stage (completed in 2017) in Setagaya-ku’s Kaminoge district. Before the pandemic, the organization used to run the monthly course “Experience the world of Noh” giving participants hands-on experience of not only practical skills, but also of masks, costumes and chanting in events offering an experience of the ABCs of Noh through the study of Noh performances. The group currently runs four practice sessions a month for members of the KEIFUKAI (headed by NAGAYAMA KEIZO) and also offers the three-month one-to-one practice course “Let’s Try !! Yokyoku and Shimai” in twice a month sessions. The Appreciation Club also runs hands-on Noh experiences and other events for visitors from outside Japan.
