This project opened the 6th floor of ABAB Ueno Store, which has a history of more than 70 years, to young artists as “uenoshita studio” to provide local residents with opportunities to interact with art, with the aim of increasing interest in art. Specifically, three programs were implemented: production studio, storage for viewing, and viewing for exhibition. Providing a production space for approximately 20 artists at any given time, the program developed a place for expression for artists who are unable to secure a large-scale production space. In addition, some of the resident artists’ works were stored and exhibited to the public, lowering the hurdles to appreciation, raising awareness, and providing opportunities for purchase. In addition, a gallery was added to the building to exhibit experimental works and provide visitors with the opportunity to encounter new art.
