Outline

Beginning by questioning why dance is not more widely appreciated, this project explores what dance can do amid difficult societal conditions. Themed around the city of Tokyo, this project focuses on the relationship with the audience, aiming to create a “general art” incorporating new values. Performances of “VIVA!lation①②③” shared the traditional culture of the mikoshi portable shrine as a communication tool with the audience. The final component “Tokyo Mikoshi” was a collaboration between dancers and musicians. “Tokyo Mikoshi’” was completed by the sculpting and construction of a gigantic costume that took a year to put together. Its stage design with costumes symbolizing recovery from division conjures a picture of Tokyo the city as an environment.
