Business Overview
The Sao Paulo Biennial is a large-scale international art exhibition of contemporary art held every two years in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The theme of "It's dark, but I still sing" presented before the COVID-19 pandemic sounded prophetic, and after a year of postponement, Mori changed the theme to “the absence of the voice (physicality) ” due to telecommunication during the COVID-19 pandemic. He created a work that overlapped the long-distance relationship and its breakup between Marcel Duchamp and his lover Maria Martins (who was also the architect of the first São Paulo Biennale) with the current era of telecommunication bias. The plan was to finish half of the work and produce the rest locally, but due to the spread of the novel coronavirus, the production method had to be changed. All of the production was done in Japan, renting an exhibition space of the same size in Japan, temporarily setting up the completed works and recording a video of the exhibition instructions. Based on the instructions, the installation was assembled only by local staff in Brazil. This was the artist's first attempt, and the preliminary preparation was extremely difficult, such as modifying the work to make it easier for local staff to understand, but the exhibition was successfully completed.
