Profile
[Kobaken and its Friends Orchestra]
Kenichiro Kobayashi set up the Kobaken and its Friends Orchestra to contribute to society at the time of the 2005 Special Olympics Winter Games in Nagano. Since then, he has continued to perform in various places. In 2010, he gave a concert at NHK Hall with an orchestra composed of musicians with intellectual disabilities. The event was made into an NHK documentary program, "Orchestra Born," which was broadcast not only in Japan but also overseas, and was very moving and resonant.
This orchestra is composed of an unspecified number of musicians who agree with the purpose of its activities, regardless of whether they are professionals, amateurs, or persons with disabilities, and staff who support them. People with intellectual disabilities are also invited to the concerts, and the concerts are held where everyone can share the joy of music in the same space. Over 70 concerts have been held throughout the country, including in the disaster-stricken areas, with the aim of creating a society in which all people can live and shine by realizing through the collective orchestra that great energy can be generated by "Support each other and live together."
