Business Overview

Since the beginning of the 21 century, many works have been produced in the world of contemporary music with increasingly musical expressions, but there is still a long time before the latest trends are introduced to Japan. On the other hand, many historical works from the 20 century have not been performed in Japan due to the difficulty of performing them. Furthermore, with the exception of the works of a few composers, almost no contemporary Japanese music has been introduced overseas. The Tokyo Genon Project, established in 2012, continues to make a dent in this situation in Japan from the standpoint of performance by introducing high-quality contemporary music from Japan and abroad. In this project, three concerts will be held in two years. In the new series, (#07), which entrusts the selection of music to up-and-coming critics and scholars, musicologist Yuji Numano selected "A work that explores the roots of the act of music while examining its relationship with society and experiencing various frictions with society" on the theme of politics and music. The second is "Musicians Selection" (#08) by the members. Programming is handled by the tuba's Shinya Hashimoto, who explores the possibilities of the instrument, from repercussion to quintet. The third event is the fourth in the "Composers' Selection" series. The program is supervised by Yuzuru Kondo, one of Japan's leading contemporary composers, who continues his cutting-edge activities to this day, aiming to reach a goal in the series (#09). In addition, we will edit and archive the performance footage we have collected so far to record works that are rarely performed, and respond to references from around the world. In addition, we will share with the world works commissioned by an ensemble that is rare in the world: saxophone, tuba, percussion instruments, piano and electronics.
