Business Overview

In the third regular performance of JSPN, "Traditional Shakuhachi vs. Innovative Shakuhachi," we listened to the sounds, playing methods, and music of various shakuhachi, from the Shosoin Shakuhachi (a restored instrument), which is said to be the prototype of the shakuhachi, and the Jinashi Shakuhachi, which is said to be the style of Komuso, to the multi-hole shakuhachi, which has many finger holes, the au klauro, which uses keys for finger holes like a flute, and the metal shakuhachi, which is made of aluminum alloy and has the same basic shape and construction as bamboo. The first half of the program featured pieces that reflect the era in which each instrument was born, and the second half featured contemporary pieces, including ensembles, and new compositions by up-and-coming composers. In addition, Mineyama Nomura, the representative, navigated between the pieces and conducted interviews with players and composers as well as supplementary explanations that were easy to understand for the general audience. The symposium with guests was a good opportunity to convey the appeal of shakuhachi and shakuhachi music and to think about the future.
