Who is free in the hell called "this world"? ――― NOBODY. Puccini's Only Comedy "Gianni Skicchi": An upstart citizen, Gianni, uses his ingenious wits to solve a family dispute over a millionaire's inheritance and a love affair between a young man and woman. Unexpectedly, this story is taken from Dante's The Divine Comedy of Hell. Gianni was driven to hell by the big show of falsifying his will. Why did Puccini create a one-act comedy with the inhabitants of hell on the stage? His fascinating imagination of hell lives on in his gems.
