FY 2016 Tokyo Arts and Culture Promotion Subsidy (Single Year Subsidy Program), Phase 2

Business Overview
A Noh performance by Kita school (14 Roppeita Memorial Foundation) at the Japan Society was organized in conjunction with the fall art exhibition "Simon Stirling: Twilight/Madagasue ni" at the Japan Society Gallery in New York. The year 1916, when the dance drama "At the Hawk's Well" by the great Irish writer Yates (1865-1939), who was greatly influenced by Noh, premiered in London, can be said to be the moment when Noh, a form of literature and theater representing Japanese culture, was born in a Western context. This year marks the 100 year anniversary of the program, and Yates will present a number of classical plays that he has seen translated into English or drafted into English to American audiences through a two-day Noh performance, talks, workshops, etc., giving a bird's-eye view of the historical intersection between the tradition of Noh and the West and its circle.
