Art and Technology: The Future of Art and Culture
In recent years, cultural facilities and festivals specializing in media art have been experimenting with practical programs that are open to society, such as not only exhibitions of works but also opportunities to learn about a wide range of expressions using media technology and participate in creative activities, and initiatives in partnership with local communities. In this way, we can see the emergence of collective creativity in a networked society, co-creation beyond countries and regions, and a new platform for arts and culture where the creativity of digital media organically connects people and society.
In this symposium, we will unravel how the creative environment of media art functions in modern society by introducing various efforts of art centers and festivals in Japan and overseas. In addition, we will consider the succession of the cultural value of such expressive activities, based on precedents of preservation and archiving of works using digital technologies such as net art. New values and challenges enabled by the creativity of digital media. We will use this opportunity to examine the possibilities of future art and culture opened up by the perspective of "art and technology" as practitioners of media art creation, education, and archiving gather together.
