START Box: Improving the Creative Environment for Artists

Supporting the creative activities of young artists seeking creative spaces through visual arts

This is a project of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Tokyo Metropolitan Foundation for History and Culture Arts Council Tokyo that provides a place for young artists who have difficulty securing ateliers and supports their continued activities.
We use vacant stores such as metropolitan housing and rent them out at an easy-to-use rate. We also provide a place for exchanges between local communities and artists, as well as for the presentation of works.

START Box Sasahatatsu (Atelier)

This is a space for creative activities in the field of visual arts such as art, photography and media arts, utilizing an empty store in Tokyo public housing along the water road (Tokyo Metropolitan Road 431 Tsunohazu Izumicho Line).

Location of the facility: Toei Sasazuka 2-chome Apartment 42, Building -15, 1st Floor
(Sasazuka 2-chome 42, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo)
Total 3 lots (1 lot approx. 17m2)

Eligibility

subject area: Visual arts such as art, photography and media arts (Excluding plays and dances)
Eligibility: (1) In need of a place for creative activities such as art and video
(2) Ability to comply with terms of use
(3) Patients must be aged 18 or older to approximately 40 years at the time of application.
(4) Residing or working in Tokyo or graduating from a school in Tokyo
(5) Active cooperation in community exchange events, etc.

Public Offering

The first offering: From April to September 2026/From April 2026 to March 2027
Application period: From 14:00 on Wednesday, January 28, 2026 to 12:00 on Monday, March 2

Eligibility

(2-3-2 Tsutsumidori, Sumida-ku, Tokyo)
Total of 4 lots (1 block approx. 40m2, 3 blocks approx. 50m2)

Eligibility

subject area: Performing arts such as drama and dance
Eligibility: Common to both individuals and organizations (In the case of an organization, the presence or absence of corporate status and the type of organization do not matter.)
All conditions (1) - (5) must be satisfied at the time of application
(1) The organization needs a practice room for performing arts
(2) The organization must be able to comply with the terms of use
(3) The organization has performed public activities in the past or is planning to perform public activities
(4) At least half of the applicants or users must be aged 18 to 40 years old
(5) Either of the following A/A must be satisfied
(a) At least half of the applicants or users must live or work in Tokyo, or must have graduated from a school in Tokyo
(b) The organization's head office or head office must be located in Tokyo.
