The novel coronavirus that spread around the world in 2020 has transformed people's lives. Large cities have shown their vulnerability to the virus, forcing people to live away from direct contact. Technology is more essential than ever, forcing us to change our perspective, our thinking, our behavior, and changing our concepts. Art, which has been asking questions about society, has also been influenced by technological innovation, but it has also made inroads into issues such as disparate society, division of people, and the destruction of nature.

In the "Arts & Media Dialogue," guest speakers will listen to artists, curators, and editors who are working to address the challenges of modern society using digital technology in response to the evolution of technology and social change. Guests from Japan will also participate in the dialogue, which will explore how each of us can become self-conscious practitioners in creating the society of the future.

A major democratic event occurred in Asia in 2020. In Hong Kong, the Chinese government enacted a national security law; in Thailand, the military dictatorship and corruption of the royal system; and in each of these countries, major demonstrations were held by students demanding the establishment of democracy for the future. But they also use technology and pop culture to build solidarity, sometimes in witty ways. Essentially, the goal is not the struggle itself, but the freedom that lies beyond it, and the movement is protest. We will listen to guests from overseas who have shared their wisdom against a great power and come up with new ideas one after another, and know about the activities that have been carried out toward the future. They will talk from the perspectives of art and technology, social conditions, and the digital community.
Eric Siu, who is well versed in "Be Water" (*1), a collective term for digital activism in Hong Kong that has the fluidity of water without a center, and Artit Suryawongkun of "Thai Netizen Network," who is well versed in Internet meme activism, such as the Milk Tea Alliance (*2), in which Taiwanese, Hong Kong, and Thai professional testers unite, and the swaying demonstrations in Thailand that cross pop culture and online culture, will take the stage. On the other hand, in the dialogue, we welcome Ms. Tomoko Shimizu, who understands the real situation of Japan, and is excellent for her deep thoughts that penetrate into the field of art as well as media culture theory.

*2 A loosely growing alliance among young activists in countries bordering China that have a culture of putting milk in their tea. Milk tea has become a kind of Internet meme, propagating the means of cultural resistance.

The situation brought about by the novel coronavirus has shaken the current social system, repudiated the post-modern historical view of development, and reminded us that humans, who built cities and tried to divide us from nature, are part of the coexistence with other living things in the environment of the earth. It may be interpreted as a criticism from the natural world against the anthropocentrism that has taken root in advanced countries, amid the current debate on defining the Anthropocene epoch. In this era of change, imagination is required to cross the past and future, science, art and culture. What is the method of curation that raises issues while breaking away from existing values and moving toward new ones?
Martin Guinard-Thelin, who co-curated the Taipei Biennale 2020 (You and I Don't Live on the Same Planet) with the philosopher Bruno Latour, and Peter Steffensen, editor of PLETHORA MAGAZINE, an art magazine from Denmark that crosses the art science anthology, are invited to discuss these questions. From Japan, we welcome artist Ai Hasegawa, speculative designer Kazuya Kawasaki, and architect Taichi Sunayama, who are trying to solve social issues from various approaches. We will explore the possibilities of curatorial perspectives with these artists, who create leaps of thought, while bringing conceptual questions down to the media of magazines and exhibitions.

Eric Siu (Artist/"Be Water") [Hong Kong/Tokyo]

香港出身、東京在住のニューメディア・アーティスト。デバイス・アート、インタラクティブ・アートなどに幅広く興味を持ち、キネティック・アート、インスタレーション、映像、アニメーションなど多岐にわたる表現方法で活動。2010年にUCLA（カルフォルニア大学・ロサンゼルス校）デザイン・メディアアート学科でMFA（美術学修士号）取得後、東京大学・石川グループ研究室に2年間在籍、現在は国内のクリエイティブ・エージェンシーでクリエイティブ・ディレクターを務める。アジアン・カルチュラル・カウンシル財団による文化交流プログラムでアメリカ国内で12ヶ月間の研究滞在の経験を持つ。アルス・エレクトロニカ、台北当代芸術館（MOCA台北）、カールスルーエ・アート・アンド・メディアテクノロジー・センター（ZKM）、FILE、トランスメディアーレ、欧州メディアアートフェスティバル（EMAF）、WRO メディアアート・ビエンナーレ、シーグラフ・アジア（SIGGRAPH Asia）、エレクトロニック・アーツ・インターソサイエティー（ISEA）、マイクロウェーブ・インターナショナル・ニューメディアアーツ・フェスティバル（Microwave）、ソー・フォート（so fort）などで作品発表。シウの作品《Touchy》は、第15回 WRO メディアアート・ビエンナーレ（2013年、ポーランド、ヴロツワフ）で大賞を受賞。同作品はディスカバリー・チャンネル、ニューラル、ワシントン・ポスト、ハフィントンポスト、クリエイターズ・プロジェクト（VICE）など、多様なメディアで紹介されている。

Arthit Suriyawongkul (AI Ethics, Data Governance Researcher/Thai Netizen Network) [Thailand]

コンピュータ科学者／人類学者。2006年以降、メコンICTキャンプ（Mekong ICT Camp）、キャンペーン・フォー・ポピュラー・メディア・リフォーム（Campaign for Popular Media Reform）、クリエイティブ・コモンズ・タイ（Creative Commons Thailand）、オープンドリーム（Opendream）などを通し、経済開発におけるICT（情報通信技術）の活用、ネット上の自由、ジャーナリズム、情報にまつわる権利などを専門に、多くの機関に対してコンサルティングを行う。2008年、タイ・ネチズン・ネットワーク（Thai Netizen Network）の共同設立に携わり、同団体にてデータ保護やオンライン上の表現活動、デジタルでの自己判断、ネットにおける参加型ガバナンスの分野に取り組む。

キュレーター／LUMA財団。アルル在住。視覚芸術と美術史を専門領域とし、環境の変異をテーマにさまざまな学際的プロジェクトを手掛ける。第12回台北ビエンナーレのキュレーターや、「Critical Zones」展（ドイツ、カールスルーエ）の共同キュレーターとしても知られる。近年ではブルーノ・ラトゥール（哲学者、フランス）と共に「Reset Modernity!」（2016年、カールスルーエ・アート・アンド・メディアテクノロジー・センター）など、多岐にわたる海外プロジェクトを5年程実施。同プロジェクトは、「Reset Modernity! He was born in Aichi Prefecture. KAWASAKI Kazuya (Speculative fashion designer, design researcher, and director of Synflux) [Japan]

Born in 1991. Completed a Master's degree in Design at the Keio University Graduate School of Media and Governance Exdesign Program and is currently enrolled in a doctoral program at the same university. Notable awards include the H&M Foundation Global Change Award, the Art Division of the Japan Media Arts Festival by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the Dezeen Award Design Longlist, and the STARTS PRIZE. Invited artist at Dutch Design Week in the Netherlands and Design Indaba in South Africa. Supervised and edited the book SPECULATIONS: Beyond Human-Centred Design (BNN Shinsha, 2019).

Taichi Sunayama (Architect, artist and director of sunayama studio) [Japan]

京都市立芸術大学美術学部総合芸術学科准教授。建築をはじめとした芸術領域における情報性・物質性を切り口とした制作・設計・企画・批評を手がける。近年の活動に「第17回ヴェネチア・ビエンナーレ国際建築展日本館展示」参加、「新建築データ」ディレクションがある。

SHIMIZU Junko (Design researcher, graphic recorder)

He was born in 1986. After graduating from Tama Art University's Department of Information Design in 2009, he became a designer. He started his activities as Tokyo Graphic Recorder in 2013. In 2019, he completed a master's degree in design at Tokyo University of the Arts. Currently, as a full-time lecturer in the Department of Information Design at Tama Art University, he is researching "Reborder," a state in which existing boundaries can be redefined in places where diverse people gather. He is the author of Graphic Recorder (BNN Shinsha, 2017).

TSUKADA Arina (Editor, Curator, President of Whole Universe)

世界のアートサイエンスを伝えるメディア「Bound Baw」編集長。2010年、サイエンスと異分野をつなぐプロジェクト「SYNAPSE」を若手研究者と共に始動。2012年より、東京エレクトロン「solaé art gallery project」のアートキュレーターを務める。2016年より、JST/RISTEX「人と情報のエコシステム（HITE）」のメディア戦略を担当。近著に『ART SCIENCE IS. 　アートサイエンスが導く世界の変容』（ビー・エヌ・エヌ新社、2018）、共著に『情報環世界 ─身体とAIの間であそぶガイドブック』（NTT出版、2019）、編集した書籍に『20XX年の革命家になるには─スペキュラティヴ・デザインの授業』（長谷川愛著、ビー・エヌ・エヌ新社、2019）がある。大阪芸術大学アートサイエンス学科非常勤講師。
