Business Overview

Artist unit KOSUGE1-16 will hold an art project called "Where are you? Giant Paper Sumo" in Sumida, which has a deep connection with sumo. A workshop called "tour" is held in 4 "rooms" in Sumida Ward, and each team comes up with ideas to create a giant 180 cm tall sumo wrestler out of cardboard boxes. The children's rich ideas create unique sumo wrestlers with four-ring names and special techniques. In the regular sumo tournament, where 32 sumo wrestlers gather from each stable, sumo wrestler production teams and participants beat the ring to determine the best wrestler. Sumo culture alive in the community will be introduced through explanations by a stable master, performances of sumo jinku and taiko drums by former sumo wrestlers and sumo wrestlers, and demonstrations of yumitori shiki (archery ceremony). In addition, local businesses will present prizes as tanimachi, and the event will be held in cooperation with sumo officials and the community.

Profile

【KOSUGE1-16】
Has been active since 2001 as an artist unit of Toru Tsuchiya and Chishino Kurumada. I pay attention to the dead substance of habitus (existence like a common tree ring) which is inherent in a certain land and relationship of people, and try to refunction it in a lively form. Giant playground equipment and sports equipment, mainly made of wood, are created to be moved by human power, and the project creates a relationship between participants and their creations.
