Business Overview

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the butofu written by Tatsumi HIJIKATA, the founder of buto, but research into the creative period of buto has not been sufficient. This project aims to contribute to the study of dance around 1960 and the dance of Tatsumi HIJIKATA by organizing and investigating valuable materials of dance and dance discovered in recent years. The author found a manuscript of 'Hanchikiki,' the work in which Tatsumi HIJIKATA appeared in 1958. The music is a valuable source of information as there are no other materials for “Hanchikiki ” except for a performance pamphlet and a few performance photos. At first, the orchestra considered playing piano and wind instruments, but at the strong will of the arranger, it was reconstructed with piano, violin, percussion instruments, baritone and reading. The music overflows with the power and joy of a work set in the land of the Ainu. Next, he was able to unearth the dance criticism and research journal "20 Century Dance" (issues 1 to 3 published in 1960), which had been regarded as a phantom magazine. This magazine was edited and published as a new revised edition by retyping from issue 1 to issue 5 (gallian printing) published in 1960. The avant-garde of dance and contemporary music in 1960, including the writings of Tatsumi HIJIKATA, were collected in one volume and became an indispensable resource for the study of Japanese dance. We also digitized 10 open reels of Tatsumi Hijikata's performance music.
