Reiwa 2 (2020) Creation Grant [Long-term Grant Program]

Business Overview

Through the international collaboration of artists, including Ireland and Japan, which are located at the extremes of East and West in Europe and Asia, and Central Asia, which connects them, the project aims to touch on the local culture and the people and lifestyles of those who have inherited it, conduct field research, discover the theme of the work through careful dialogue generated through collaboration, and change the thinking of the participants and their perspective on the art scene. Through these processes, we hope to find a new perspective on contemporary dance that has matured, and that the collaborative creation will lead to the development of future activities such as the improvement of each person's perspective, experience, and technique. Using the keywords "locality," "animism," "shamanism," and "city," this project aims to connect local cultures, which tend to be opaque in global society, across history. How can intangible physical expressions, sounds, and narratives, which have been handed down from ancient times in the Celtic culture of Ireland, Central Asia, and Japan, approach our memories? Also, how can we relate to Japanese tradition and the present beyond differences in forms of expression, culture, nationality, and language? Prayer, such as shamanism and communal spirit worship, has been deeply related to the symbiosis between humans and nature in the context of changes in the natural environment. The dismantling of orderly communities, the transformation of people by external intrusion, the loss of a sense of internal and external boundaries, and the composition of dance, music, and images induced by the dialogue of natural rhythms and echoes of voices that transcend language, attempted to create a work that depicts the pulse of the future of traditional culture that highlights these keywords. [Outline of the Project in Year 1] Tokyo Performance, Workshop, and Lecture Content: In the Tokyo Performance in Year 1 of the Project, we were able to achieve mutual cultural understanding through collaborative creation with 2 Irish musicians who had come to Japan after agreeing to a self-isolation period of 14 days. Due to the state of emergency that was issued just before the performance, we were unable to welcome the audience to the venue and perform. However, it was an unexpected pleasure for us to be able to view the works across areas and generations through the presentation of the works and online workshops and lectures. Due to travel restrictions, overseas artists were not able to come to Japan to perform, but they performed works with the participation of artists from both Ireland and Uzbekistan through online creation. In the workshop, directors and choreographers shared with the participants the background to the creation of the works, while the online lecture focused on the nomadic culture of Central Asia. I shared how the work was created by cross culture.
