Reiwa 2 (2020) Creation Grant [Long-term Grant Program]

Business Overview
Matsui Shu sets up a study group called Matsui Shu's Sample Room to reflect on the world through theater. The age, sex and location of members are not considered. Create a group that does not focus on economic efficiency or productivity, that can shed its social title and become "other" and participate in the community. Work that is half play and half serious to satisfy intellectual needs. By taking a bird's-eye view of oneself as a "sample," we aim to lower the hurdle of making things and create a place where people can play with things they don't normally create and produce new output. With the aim of creating a circulation of creativity through a flat exchange between participants and creators, who transcend boundaries, we will create works and release documents (in the form of video and text) that archive our activities at the screenings. He also produces theatrical performances, sells tickets, merchandise and translates.
[MATSUI Shu (director, writer, and actor)]
Born in Tokyo in 1972. After working as Seinen-danji, he founded the theater group Sample in 2007. It became an individual unit in 2017. Through the expression of a mixture of reality and fiction in the form of theater, it questions how complex an animal is. Humans are animals that cannot be separated from "truth" and "lies," and they sometimes behave in unexpected ways. This is expressed as a "sample" of today's rapidly changing society. Matsui Shu's worldview, language, and physical expression aim to function as a "resistance guide for surviving the bogus real world." The scope of his activities has expanded to include performances, workshops, magazines and participation in art festivals.
"Shift" and "Consuming Calories" have been translated into French, and "The Basement" has been translated into Italian and Korean.
Won the 55 Kishida Kunio Drama Prize for "Boastful Son" (2010).
He participated in the Kuandu Arts Festival (Taiwan) with Takeoff in 2016, and the Festival Tautonne Paris (France) with Proud Son in 2018.
