Business Overview
The Road was planned to be performed as a documentary play to reflect on the relationship between Japan and Taiwan and to introduce the different ways of perceiving things and cultures of the two countries. However, a state of emergency was declared, and international travel became impossible, so they had many discussions, including the option of canceling the performance or leaving the actors. Fear of the coronavirus was directly linked to death. In the view of life and death in East Asia, it is considered that human life is not a line but a circle, that is, a cycle that continues. ― From this point of view, 'death' is also the beginning of rebirth. In 2020, he decided to create his work online in the hope that his work, created by Japanese and Taiwanese theater artists overflowing with "death," would serve as a starting point for people's rebirth. Actors from Japan and Taiwan created short films with different textures and styles during the COVID-19 pandemic, and inserted traditional Taiwanese play called Hotei into the short films, allowing viewers to experience the “sekisho ” (checkpoint) that people go through from death to reincarnation. We hope that the various landscapes we will see during the seven-day journey will give us a new imagination for rebirth.

[Nguyen Theater Company (Taiwan)]
The members from Taiwan are the "Nguyen Theater Company" and masters and musicians of the traditional puppetry "Hotei." "Ruan" means "we" in Taiwanese. He is based in Chiayi in southern Taiwan with the thought of "We don't fight alone, we take it one step at a time and get it done together." They perform plays in Taiwanese, the indigenous language that is being lost, and weave local culture into contemporary plays, aiming to popularize plays.
