FY31 (2019) 1st term Creation Grant [Single-year grant program]

Business Overview

In fiscal 2019, the theme for the season was "Encounter," with the aim of creating a program that expresses various forms of encounter through new and old musical works.
#67 featured Mahler's Song of the Earth, a new arrangement by Dogen KINOWAKI using Chinese instruments. In addition to being able to convey the intention of the original piece more sensitively through the inclusion of Erhu and Fuezi musicians, which are suitable for the poems of Chinese poets from which the work was conceived, I think that I was able to convey the fruitful potential of the phenomenon of "encounter" in the form of music through the metatheatrical creation method and honka-taki, which involved the works of Fujikura and Kinowaki, which were inspired by the verse of poets from various countries. For #68, from the perspective of meeting a composer and a nomad, we worked on commissioning a new work (Arrangements of Michio Kitazume's works by Yoriaki Matsudaira, Naoki Sakata, and H. Vazquez (Eberto Vazquez), and by Masao Nakagawa), which we had not actively done in the past. With the exception of Fujikura's Japanese premieres, all four of the songs were world premieres, creating exciting and challenging content.
