[General Incorporated Association Arts and Creative Mind]
About Arts and Creative Mind (ACM Gallery)
Arts and Creative Mind was founded by two sisters whose older brother has a severe brain disorder. We introduce the expression of people with various disabilities, such as intellectual disabilities, as art, and work to connect their existence with society. ACM Gallery, which is operated by this incorporated association, is located 3 minutes' walk from the west exit of Tokyo Ebisu Station, and has a permanent exhibition of their art. There, we sell their works at a reasonable price and work to give back to them economically. A crowdfunding campaign in June 2018 attracted 128 supporters, and the company was established in August.

Have you ever seen art created by people with mental or physical disabilities? Many of his works are powerful and poignant, and in Europe and North America they are called Art Brut or Outsider Art, and they are attracting a lot of attention. In the 1940s, the French painter Jean Dubuffet, who was impressed by expressions such as the psychotic created outside of existing Western art, named his collection Art Brut "Living Art" as a strong antithesis to European academia.

"Outsider art" is the English translation of "Art Brut" by British critic Roger Cardinal, but it is generally known as a slightly broader concept than "Art Brut" as it refers to art created by self-taught artists, such as Sunday painters, who do not have a professional art education.
On the other hand, Japan has a long history of plastic work in facilities for people with intellectual disabilities as part of welfare education since before World War II. Even now, there are active expression activities in many facilities. However, it is still not widely known, and many wonderful works remain dormant across the country.

Art is a fair field where both able-bodied and disabled people can play an active role. In the world of art, such people who are handicapped in their ordinary jobs may be able to display their disabilities as hidden talents. The major difference between able-bodied artists and disabled artists is that they cannot connect with society on their own. In order to get their art out into the world, they always need the deep involvement of a third party. The harsh reality is that the average monthly wage at workplaces for people who have difficulty working normally is less than 20,000 yen. We started this activity to improve this situation. Concretely, we aim to discover their works that they cannot send out on their own, create a place for them to meet many people, and have them buy them even at a modest price, so that they can earn money.
