Business Overview

< Purpose and Purpose of Activities > The Arakawa Africa Executive Committee is organized mainly by members of companies, galleries, and artist organizations that continuously conduct art and cultural activities related to Africa in Arakawa Ward, Tokyo. "Arakawa Africa," a multi-cultural art project held every summer and autumn, examines through exhibitions, dialogue, and exchanges the ways of life and views that are common to us but different from those of Africa because of the relationship between Japan and Africa, and provides the general public with an opportunity to enjoy and learn from each other about a society where multiculturalism coexists. Based on both global and local perspectives and values, Arakawa Africa aims to present new values by deepening ties with unexpected "neighbors" while unearthing the region's unique future resources through the rediscovery of Arakawa's downtown culture. < <Details of activities (Programs, major artists and staff, etc.)>> This time, events were held focusing on creative activities from a global perspective while promoting the exchange of people and contents between the two regions. 1 "Arakawa Africa Residence" (Self Select: Acceptance of Nairobian in Tokyo) "Self Select" is an ongoing project in which the artist Miya Nishio creates photographs and videos of passers-by in cities around the world, asking them in local languages to exchange clothes. In this new version, Nairobi-born and Nairobi-raised David Omondi, who worked as Nishio's research assistant while living in Kenya, has been invited to Japan to express the experiences of Omondi, who was given the order to exchange clothes with strangers in Japan, and the people who were approached by Omondi, through photos, videos, audio conversations and diaries. The activity base was opened to the public as an open studio. 2.
