Business Overview
Following on from 2016, the second "Noh Re-Imagined" festival at London's Kings Place featured a cross-genre collaboration between Japan and the UK, focusing on the theme of "Dreamy Noh" through the lens of contemporary art and science. Six Noh performers presented the dreamy Noh piece "Izutsu" (half-Noh), as well as classical pieces and a new Noh piece, "Reflection," with music by Yukihiro Isso and script by Atsushi Iriki. Pioneering British artists also presented two new works, exploring the illusions and aesthetics of Noh. Two Japanese and British neuroscientists gave a presentation that scientifically explored the relationship between the dreaminess of Noh, which freely expresses the soul's ability to move between reality and the imaginary, and the brain. Two professors from Hosei University's Noh Theatre Research Institute also gave a lecture, complete with a Q&A session, on "The Mechanisms that Create Illusions: Noh Movements and Masks." At the London live music venue Café OTO, he performed an improvisational performance with two local musicians, and at the international performing arts festival Clasicos En Alcala in Madrid, he performed a Noh performance at the Cervantes Theater in Alcala (Madrid) as part of the 150th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Spain. <Cast> ■Noh actors: Yukihiro Isso [Isso-school flute player], Masaki Umano [Kanze-school shite player], Jiichi Asami [Kanze-school shite assistant player], Yasusuke Tanabe [Okura-school kotsuzumi player], Mitsuhiro Kakihara [Takayasu-school otsuzumi player], Kiyoshi Yoshitani [Konparu-school taiko drum player] ■Collaborating artists in the UK: Clod Ensemble (performing arts company), Wiebke Leister (photographic artist), David Toop (sound artist), Leon Michener (avant-garde pianist), Neus Torres Tamarit & Ben Murray (artist), Roger Turner (percussion), Ute Kanngeiser (cello) ■Neuroscientists: Atsushi Iriki (RIKEN), Semir Zeki (University College London) ■Nohgaku researchers: Reiko Yamanaka (Director and professor of Hosei University Nohgaku Research Institute), Keizo Miyamoto (Professor, Hosei University Nohgaku Research Institute)
