Business Overview
Cross Transit is an international co-production project created by choreographer and dancer Akiko Kitamura, along with Japan and Asian artists, over three years from the showing of the work-in progress to the main performance. This course explores the relationship between dance and music and art and culture rooted in regions such as Cambodia, Myanmar, and Manipur, India, as well as the physical techniques of ancient martial arts, as well as their artistry, rituals, and music, and attempts to further expand the vocabulary of dance to include Asian perspectives. 【Overview of the first year of the project】 Amrita Performing Arts Center, an art organization based in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, which will be a counter-partner of this project, was established with the aim of preserving Cambodia's traditional performing arts, and is currently focusing on revitalizing contemporary dance and promoting the creative activities of a new generation of Cambodian artists. In the first year, with their support, I had the opportunity to conduct research on traditional dances, music, spirit rituals, martial arts, and meet a variety of dancers. ・We explored the possibilities of expression beyond the boundaries of "dance" in Cambodia, Myanmar, and India. Through long-term stays, he absorbed deeper elements of local culture and ethnicity. In Tokyo, choreographer Akiko Kitamura rehearsed and created, and from the end of August, Cambodian dancer Chy Ratana and Cambodian drama Turku Kim Hak joined in early September for the Tokyo premiere. ◇Performance ・September 29-October 2, 2016 Venue: Theater Tram (Setagaya-ku, Tokyo) *Although not eligible for this grant, the same work will also be performed at the Matsumoto Civic Art Center Small Hall (Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture) on September 22 of the same year [Outline of the third year of the project] Field survey by Kitamura from August 2017. He conducts research in Indonesia and Thailand. He also created residences in Tokyo and Sado. In November, he co-produced with Amrita Performing Arts in Cambodia, and after creating at a local residence, he significantly revised the stage design and performed his work at the Department of Performing Arts on November 16 and 17. In January of the following year, Yokoyama conducted a music research residency and creation in Borneo, Indonesia. March, Mangangsana, Chy Ratana, Luluk Ari recruitment. Rehearsals began in Tokyo with all the members, including Japan artists. As the culmination of the third year, the following activities were carried out. Akiko Kitamura (Choreographer and Dancer, Associate Professor, Faculty of Humanities, Shinshu University)
While attending Waseda University, he studied in Berlin as a trainee of the Agency for Cultural Affairs in 1995. He presented commissioned works at the Bates Dance Festival (USA) in 2001 and the American Dance Festival (USA) in 2003. His representative work, "finks," was performed in numerous cities in 2001 and won the Montreal Hour's 2005 Best Dance Work Award. His 2005 commissioned work, "ghostly round," at the Berlin Haus der Kulturen (House of World Cultures) received rave reviews worldwide. He has also choreographed and performed in international productions, including ACE dance&music (UK, 2007/2011) and Artzoyd (France, 2009/2010). In 2011, he launched the international collaborative project "To Belong" with Indonesia, which has presented new works annually in Jakarta, Tokyo, Kobe, Chino, and Singapore. In 2014, he presented "To Belong/Suwung" at Dance New Air (October 3-5, Aoyama Round Theater), and successfully toured Indonesia in December. In the same year, the internationally co-produced Indonesian opera "Gandari Dance Opera" (December 12-13, 2014, Teater Jakarta, choreography provided) won the Best Performance Award in Indonesia's Tempo newspaper. He was in charge of the overall production of the Shinshu University Agency for Cultural Affairs project in 2013-14. In 2015, he was a grantee of the ACC Individual Grant Japan-US Arts Exchange Program.
