2022年より毎年夏に開催しているワークショップ「記録から表現をつくる」では、参加者が自身の関心に基づいて、残された記録を集めたり、自ら記録したりすることからはじめ、たがいにプロセスを共有し、対話しながら、記録やリサーチをひらいていくための表現を実践しています。
In this exhibition, eight volunteers from the past workshop participants explore and present their current forms of expression while composing works and records based on their research on themes they have been facing since the time of the workshop or current interests. There are a wide variety of themes that reflect the reality of life, but if you put them next to each other, you will find similar issues, or conversely, similar themes but with very different details.
Each of them will (or may) face the project as their life's work over the long term. I have a feeling that stopping at each juncture to make a presentation and sharing it with various people will lead to richer activities.
Please come and enjoy the "present" form of the project with its rich individuality.

About the theme of the exhibition
The contours of oneself and others appear, unraveling and unraveling.
In this exhibition, eight artists worked on the expression of "records" as an attempt to measure the distance between individuals and society and to disentangle their gaze with their own hands.
From war documents and local cultural research to personal experiences and diaries.
Taking various forms, such as text, video, and embroidery, from records of "individuals" and "here," a single person's interest is quietly opened to others and society.
And as you follow the work, your thoughts of others and other places become connected with your own senses and memories. I hope that time will rise in this place.

Exhibitor's comments and theme
[Kijinmaru Shinano/Big Events and Personal Life]
I first learned the word logistics hospital when I was shown a photo of my grandmother's brother who died in the war. My grandmother's brother looks much younger and younger than I had imagined. I imagined the last thoughts of one of the war dead as I wondered if I was still influenced by past events and people that seemed far away than I imagined.

[Chakuma Fuku/Batabata-cha and Living]
Batabata-cha is a tea culture that has been popular among ordinary people in their daily lives. At the Batabata-cha Densho-kan in Asahi-machi, Toyama Prefecture, you can see the scene where local people gather and enjoy tea while chatting. The chasen is hurriedly shaken at hand, and time passes in a relaxed manner.
We focused on batabata-cha as a form of relaxation and community that has been nurtured with unique tea leaves, tea whisk, and tea bowls.
In this exhibition, we consider batabata-cha as an activity rooted in daily life and try to taste it from a different angle.

Editing the online encyclopedia Wikipedia is one of his life's works. I am interested in the process by which local records and memories are revealed to the public, and I research and write articles on topics that interest me from time to time.
In this article, I would like to address a topic in the modern history of Taiwan and express my editing process in Wikipedia and the internal movements that occur in the process.

[Chiharu Shibanuma/Seeing and Describing]
When I read a sentence that says "I saw a mountain," I can imagine the existence and shape of the mountain, but I can't see the gaze of the person who wrote it. Needless to say, it's natural, but I still miss it. I look closely at the records of each individual who lives "somewhere other than here," and think about how I can reach out to them in my own body.

At elementary school entrance ceremonies in Japan, there are paper bags handed out with textbooks. The paper bag, which conveys the purpose of the free textbook salary system, has the phrase "We want you to contribute to the prosperity and welfare of our country." At a time when competition for economic growth, environmental destruction, war, and division are rampant, I would like to think about a modern community, starting with a textbook bag.

The scenery recalled from hearing about the silent buildings, tools, songs, etc. in Jogashima located in Miura Peninsula, Kanagawa Prefecture is embroidered on the construction sheet. The blue sheet on the inorganic construction site was once used as a blank sheet to cover the landscape and create a space for personal painting.

[Nakajima Ryusei/Watching Heart]
A lot of things happen in front of my eyes. Some people wonder how they should take it. What are you and I going to see? It is quite possible, I think, that something like the heart of the gazer may be given to it a real history. In such moments, for example, what kind of eyes do we look at them, happy or sad, love or hate, good or bad, kill or live?

[Miyaoka Konoka/Jogashima, Kajinosaburo Jinja]
On the western edge of Jogashima Island, located on the Miura Peninsula in Kanagawa Prefecture, there used to be Kajinosaburo Shrine until a few years ago. The place has now been lost to the development of the island, the land has been cleared and we cannot see it anymore. It is an attempt to capture the lost scenery from the narratives of the islanders and the photographs and writings of people who visited the island in the past. I think that even if it is gone, the place may remain with someone.

"Seeing and Describing" Workshop
In the act of seeing, the shape of others and the world comes up. Write down the experience to share it. This is a workshop to experience them. Spend time looking at the passing scenery and the movement of someone, and check each person's gaze.
