Open Forum: The Role of the Arts Council in Japan

Time of the event
Saturday, March 2, 2013 14:00~17:30
Venue
The Japan Foundation JFIC Hall (Sakura) (Address: Tokyo, Shinjuku-ku, Yotsuya 4-4-1)
Sponsor

Arts Council Tokyo (Tokyo Metropolitan Foundation for History and Culture)
British Council
Japan Foundation

In recent years, discussions about "Arts Councils" have become active, and some national and local governments are introducing them. Under these circumstances, the question of "What are the functions of the Arts Council and what role should it play in Japan's cultural administration?" has come to be asked.
With this in mind, Arts Council Tokyo, the British Council and the Japan Foundation co-hosted a seminar (March 1, closed) and an open forum (March 2) in which Richard Russell, Director of Strategic Affairs of the Arts Council England (ACE), a leading organization, was invited to exchange views on issues facing Japan and the UK. What should the Arts Council aim for through grants, information and other support? This time, the discussion was held from the perspective of "partnership" with arts and cultural organizations.

Outline of the meeting

In recent years, discussions about "Arts Councils" have become active, and some national and local governments are introducing them. Under these circumstances, the question of "What are the functions of the Arts Council and what role should it play in Japan's cultural administration?" has come to be asked.

This time, Richard Russell, Director of Strategic Affairs at Arts Council England, a leading organization, has been invited to discuss issues between Japan and the UK. What should the Arts Council aim for through grants, information and other support? In particular, I would like to consider this issue from the perspective of partnership with arts and cultural organizations.
