Business Overview

In his first exhibition in Taiwan in three years, artist Chen Weiteng will hold his solo exhibition "Paramita" at the Kaohsiung Municipal Museum of Art from November 9 to December 29. This exhibition, planned by curator Haruhiko So, brings together important works from Taiwan to Japan over the past 10 years. Through handwritten poetry, planar works, three-dimensional sculptures, and works using a variety of materials, he expresses deep thoughts on themes such as life, growth, and existence. The title of the exhibition, "higan," is derived from Buddhist terminology and means "the way to higan" or "the way to liberation." Through this title, Chen Wei-ting explores the boundaries between this shore and the equinox, between reality and illusion, and puts his own interpretation into the work.

Profile

[Chen Wei Ting]
Born in Tainan, Taiwan. He received a master's degree in global art practice from the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts. Growing up surrounded by picture books, he was passionate about creating his own poetic world on paper. For Chen, writing is an act of capturing fragments of life, and poetry has become another form of pictorial expression.
His works mainly use acrylic paints and oil-based pastels, often accompanied by poems that correspond to visual effects. This poem provides a suggestive clue to the work, depicting the intersection of childhood and adult experiences and the ideal utopia he saw.
In recent years, Chen's works have been widely exhibited internationally, including in New York, Hong Kong, Spain, Dubai, Thailand and Japan. Winner of the 42 Ueno Royal Museum Art Painting Grand Prize, the Shibuya Awards 2021 (Grand Prize) and the Shibuya Awards 2023 (Tomio Koyama Jury Prize). He also received a grant from the Arts Council Tokyo and the CAF Award 2022 (Japan Contemporary Art Foundation). His works are housed in the Liho Culture and Art Foundation and Taichung Dali Art Park. He is currently based in Tokyo.
