Business Overview
As a resident artist in Esplanade's program “Contemporary Performing Arts Research Residency,” I spent about three months in Singapore researching rivers and flood control. At the end of his stay, he presented his research to the public. After returning to Tokyo, he created and published Lines and Around Lines based on this research. The program consists of two parts: a lecture performance about Singapore's cities, society, and nation by tracing the flow of water; and a tour performance in which an audio guide walks through the low-lying areas of eastern Tokyo. The first part shows the process in which a line is drawn through narration and gestures, which combine photographs, images, and models, to define its surroundings and make it an object that can be used by humans. In the second part, spectators walk individually with a simple map showing only the direction of the Sumida River, the goal point, and bearing magnets. Crossing the lines of the three urban infrastructures that lead to the Sumida River, the audience sometimes walks the same path, sometimes different. While recalling the narratives and images of Singapore, the walk overlapped with the image of Tokyo and transformed the city I had already known. Profile
[Transfield Studio]
A unit by architect Riku Yamakawa and performing arts manager Yuko Takeda. By conducting fieldwork from multiple perspectives that go back and forth between urban life and urban planning, we try to share with the participants as a physical experience how people can relate to a wide space and a long time.
