Business Overview

This film depicts the life of Kuroiwa Shoko, the creator of the newspaper Banchoho, which was first published in the Meiji era. In the Meiji period, there were the Shinbunshi Jorei and Zanboritsu, and newspapers were often suspended due to their outspoken attitude toward authority and harsh social criticism. While newspapers all raise prices, Manchobo keeps its prices the same and does not tamper with reporters' articles. Manchobo once boasted the largest circulation among the newspapers in Tokyo, but the situation surrounding Manchobo and the thought of Emika changed completely with the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese War. At a time when keywords such as "blockage" and "intolerance" are frequently used, this film depicts "freedom" in an individual's life and the relationship between society and the individual through the life of Tachika, whose main stage is Manchobo. Its director, Keita SHIRAI, won the Sugimura Haruko Prize at the 25 Yomiuri Engeki Taisho (2018), and this is the first performance by the theater company after winning the prize.

Profile

[Onsen Dragon Theater Company]
Established in 2010. The current members are Atsushi Sakamoto, Ryuichi Tsukuba, Ken Iwai no Fu, Keita Shirai and Yu Harada. In recent years, in the Japanese theater world, it has become more and more common to have a unit system in which actors gather for each production and perform, or to have one person act as both writer and director. In order to ensure the quality of the production, "Onsen Dragon" is produced by a fixed group of actors. The company has two playwrights and regularly performs original works.
